MVA® Finishing Transforms Materials: A Technology Group Shaping the Future

Defining Colors, Refining Fabrics, and Assigning New Roles to Fibers

Established in 1961, Tohoku Seiren Co., Ltd. has played a key role in the development of Yonezawa-ori, specializing in fabric refining, dyeing, and finishing. While initially handling both traditional Japanese and Western-style textiles, the company gradually specialized in dyeing and finishing techniques for Western-style garments as the times changed.

During the 1980s, Tohoku Seiren pioneered the Deep Black Dyeing technique, producing a rich, deep black that absorbs light and achieves a uniform, elegant appearance which is FORMAL BLACK – the unique Japanese Fashion Style for every Japanese for unique life moment.

This innovation became a hallmark of the company’s expertise and was widely adopted for luxury formalwear. In collaboration with major synthetic fiber manufacturers, Tohoku Seiren also explored dyeing and finishing techniques for hybrid materials that combine natural and synthetic fibers. These high-quality fabrics have found applications beyond apparel, including sportswear and industrial materials, offering a balance of functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Today, Tohoku Seiren remains focused on developing future-to-be technologies. It continually researches new materials and dyeing techniques while advancing sustainable production methods. The company takes pride in its ability to define colors, refine fabrics, and breathe new life into fibers. As a technology-driven organization, Tohoku Seiren builds on its tradition while driving innovation, expanding the possibilities of textiles and shaping the future.

Dyeing the Future with Sustainable Textile Processing

At Tohoku Seiren, we are committed to developing technologies with a vision for the future. One of our most significant innovations is MVA® Processing. The inspiration for this groundbreaking technology came when our former president happened to watch a television special on nanomaterials. Moved by their potential, he became determined to address the excessive water and energy consumption in dyeing and finishing processes, a passion that became the driving force behind MVA® development.

While Tohoku Seiren has long specialized in processing synthetic fibers, we took on the challenge of applying our expertise to natural fibers to contribute to a more sustainable future. After two years of fundamental research and a five-year patent application process, we successfully passed 97 tests to develop MVA® Processing. This innovative technique coats each individual fiber at the nano level, enhancing its functionality while preserving its natural texture and feel.

MVA® Processing is particularly well-suited for regenerated cellulose fibers, such as Asahi Kasei’s Bemberg®. It reduces shrinkage and color fading issue during washingwhile improving the durability of garments, allowing them to be worn and loved for years. When you touch the fabric, you can feel the craftsmanship embedded within the fibers—a testament to the technology that enhances both function and beauty.

Tohoku Seiren will continue to push the boundaries of textile innovation, crafting materials that seamlessly merge technology and tradition to create a better, more sustainable future.
